N-Phenyl-N'-(4-pyridyl)urea (4PU), which was originally synthesized by Bruce et al. and also reported by Okamoto as a highly active cytokinin in the tobacco pith callus bioassay, showed a marked effect on shoot formation in tobacco pith disk and callus with a single application. Details of experiments and results are reported and the interrelation between auxin and 4PU for organ formation is discussed.
