Dark-grown cells of a mutant strain of Chlorella regularis contained chlorophyll a and protochlorophyll, phytyl ester of protochlorophyllide. Under illumination, protochlorophyll was quantitatively and directly converted into chlorophyll a. The photoconversion was dependent on light intensity and temperature and proceeded in a cell-free preparation. The pathway of chlorophyll formation found in the mutant cells is entirely different from that from protochlorophyllide by way of chlorophyllide a, Which is generally observed in green plants.
