Gibberellic acid-induced secretion of hydrolases in barley aleurone layers

Activities of phosphatases in the aleurone layers of a huskless barley, Ehime-hadaka No. 1, were enhanced in the absence of gibberellic acid (GA_3), while the enzyme secretion was absolutely dependent upon its presence. GA_3 was required for both induction and secretion of a-amylase. The longer the preincubation of the tissue without GA_3, the longer was the lag period before secretion of both a group of phosphatases and α-amylase. Changes in the fine structure of aleurone cells were also investigated. Characteristics of the phase transition from enzyme accumulation to enzyme secretion seemed to be a development of a bundled type of endoplasmic reticulum.
