The growth of two perennial aquatic plants, arrowhead (Sagittaria pvgmaea) and pondweed (Potamogeton distinctus) is greatly promoted by C_2H_4 and CO_2 in the dark; C_2H_4 and CO_2 are synergistic in this response. C_2H_4 is produced by these two species.
