Xylan synthetase activity in oat coleoptiles was stimulated in vivo by pretreatment with the growth inhibitor peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) . However, in vitro treatment of the particulate preparation with PAN caused enzyme inhibition. Other sulfhydryl reagents, which inhibited growth, such as oxidized glutathione and parachloromercuri-benzoate, also inhibited xylan synthetase activity both in vivo and in vitro. It was concluded that the synthetase is protected internally from PAN and that other enzymes on the pathway to xylan formation may be inhibited by PAN.
