A cell-free particulate preparation from oat seedlings showed xylan synthetase activity, producing xylan from uridine diphosphate xylose. With high substrate concentration or prolonged incubation, three polysaccharides other than neutral xylan were synthesized. It is suggested that one of these might be a glycolipid and the other two might be glucuronoxylans.
