Availability of amino acids for the growth of rice callus tissue was examined by supplying various kinds of amino acids to the tissue separately or in combination. When an amino acid was supplied alone as the sole source of nitrogen, only the following five amino acids were found to favour the growth of callus tissue ; arginine, alanine, asparagine, glutamine and proline. In combination with other acids, both AHCH and CMAA were very effective in stimulating the growth of tissue, but EHCH was inhibitory. When methionine or arginine was excluded from the CMAA medium, callus growth on the medium was reduced significantly. The effect produced by omitting meihionine suggested that some amino acid interaction was involved in this instance.
