The mineral group of natural zeolites is composed of 47 species which have specific crystal structure and specific chemical composition. The mode of occurrence of natural zeolites can be classified into three groups. Among them, zeolites replacing volcanic glasses often occupy a large portion of rocks and form "zeolite rocks". They are grouped into several mineralogical zones, according to mineral assemblage of zeolite-clay mineral-silica mineral. Zeolite rocks are mainly formed by burial diagenesis-low grade metamorphism, diagenesis in alkali saline lake (closed system), weathering in open system, and hydrothermal alteration. Burial diagenesis-low grade metamorphism is mainly controlled by temperature, whereas next two genetical types are controlled by chemistry of reacting solutions. Hydrothermal alteration is affected by both temperature and chemistry of hydrothermal solutions. Thus, natural zeolites of each genetic type are formed under different conditions. At present, quantitative data on formation temperature and chemistry of reacting solutions are rare except saline and hydrothermal solutions. Formation temperature in diagenesis may be effectively obtained from bore-hole temperature, if diagenesis is progressive.
