On selenium dioxide oxidation, ⊿^9-octahydroazulene gave 1-oxo-⊿^9-octahydroazulene which was converted into 1-methylazulene through Grignard reaction and subsequent dehydrogenation. On similar oxidation, ⊿^<4,9>-hexahydroazulene afforded 4,5-cyclopentatropone (or 6-oxo-⊿^<4,7,9>-tetrahydroazulene) via 6-oxo-⊿^<4,9>-hexahydroazulene. The tropone was identified by its derivation into 6-methylazulene.
