The impulse to promote democracy has been a recurrent feature of United States policy toward Latin America in this century. In the 1980s, Latin American experienced a wide spread reemerge of democracy. But, Chilean case was different from other southern corn coutries (Brazil, Argentina) cases. Chile had been enjoyed more than one hundred year's tradicion of democracy, but after the 1973's military coup d'etat, General Augusto Pinochet had urged the Chilean people under the oppresed, authoritarian regime more than fifteen years. The purpose of this article is to high-lighten the effects acted by the U. S. plolicy under the Reagan administration to promote resurgence of democracy, particularly in Chilean plebiscite campaign in 1988. Many authors have analyzed the Chilean redemocratization process as a result of inward product from Chilean society protest movement, which has based on the longtime dmocratic traditon. But I think also it is very important the role of foreign assistance, particularly, from U. S., Catholic Church and Germany etc., to Chilean transition process.
