Influence of Photoperiod and Temperature on the Production of Sexual Morphs in a Green and a Red Form of Myzus persicae (SULZER) (Homoptera, Aphididae) : II Rearing under Natural Conditions

Two clones of Myzus persicae from Kyoto, green SCG-1 and red JCR-1 (both holocyclic), were reared under natural conditions at Kyoto in 1975 and '76 to study their sexual morph production in relation to the seasonal trends of photoperiod and temperature. The production of both gynoparae and males was initiated significantly earlier in SCG-1 than in JCR-1 in both years, as expected from the laboratory results (TAKADA, 1982). In 1976 the temperature in September and early October was comparatively low, and the sexual morph production in both clones started earlier than in 1975. The difference between the two years was larger in SCG-1 than in JCR-1. Temperature seemed to be more important as a cue for the sexual morph induction than daylength. The temperature thresholds obtained in the laboratory agreed better with the maximum temperatures than with the means in the field. The relative adaptability of these two clones to holocyclic overwintering at Kyoto was discussed in relation to the time of leaf fall of peach trees.
