Parasite Complex of the Garden Pea Leaf-miner, Phytomyza horticola GOUREA, in Japan

Twenty hymenopterous species, 2 of which belong to the Braconidae, 4 the Pteromalidae and 14 the Eulophidae, are confirmed as parasites of the garden pea leaf-miner, Phytomyza horticola, in Japan. A key is provided for the separation of these parasites and their mode of parasitism is discussed. Three years' surveys on peas at Kyoto showed : first, in the first generation 48% or more of total mortality after hatching occurs in the pupal stage and 38% or less in the larval stage while in the third generation 84% or more of total mortality occurs in the larval stage ; secondarily, throughout all the generations mortality is caused mainly by parasitism by parasites, of which Chrysocharis pentheus and Diglyphus isaea in the larval stage of host and Dacnusa nipponica in the pupal stage are very important. The transition in the relative abundance of these parasites from the first to third generation is discussed in relation to the period of their occurrence and the competition among them. The biology of the leaf-miner and 3 dominant parasites is briefly described. The parasite complex of P. horticola is compared with those of some other agromyzids examined in other countries.
