The eggs of Teleogryllus commodus required high temperature for a rapid termination of the late stage of their diapause, although they were able to complete the early stage at both low and high temperatures. This was indicated by a higher percentage of eggs developing promptly at a high temperature than at a low after the same period of chilling. When the eggs were older than 30 days at 20℃, they became competent to develop in response to the brief exposure to a higher temperature. This diapause-terminating effect was more pronounced at 30 or 35℃ than at 25℃. Even a temperature as high as 40℃ induced development, if the exposure was so short (6hr) that no deleterious effect was exerted. The reaction evoked by an exposure to warmth was somewhat reversible in that intermittent exposures were less effective than a continuous one. The requirement for warmth thus elucidated seems to be an effective safeguard against the untimely termination of diapause before the growing season.
