The Effect of Root Gaps on Low Cycle Fatigue Strengths of Cruciform Welded Joints

In fillet welded joints, there are frequently some gaps between plates to be welded and it cannot be avoided to some degree that the gaps are yielded in a complicated structure such as ship hull. According to a study on ductile strength of load-carrying fillet welds, the fracture strength of joint with a comparatively small amount of gap is not less than that of joint without gap. However, such joints are frequently subjected to fatigue failure and yet we have not enough data concerning the fatigue strengths of those joints. Therefore, in order to clarify the effect of gaps on low cycle fatigue strength of load-carrying fillet welds, experimental as well as theoretical investigations were carried out. As the result of this study, it has been shown that the fatigue strength of fillet welded joint with gap does not deteriorate in comparison with that of joint without gap, provided that the amount of actual gap after the weld is less than about 3 mm.
