The following factors are considered to be main causes of the lamellar tearing : namely, (1) stress in Z-direction, (2) inclusions and (3) embrittlement due to hydrogen, strain aging, etc. However, some of the lamellar tearings occurring in actual welded structures are due to some other factors such as root cracking and gouging ; and at the same time those three main factors would be affected differently according to the kinds and shapes of inclusions. After thorough consideration and investigation of the above situation these are the points made clear : 1. As an assessment test of lamellar tearing sensitivity, one of those three methods or combinating of them are appropriate : (1) L-direction notched tensile test (newly developed). (2) Z-direction tensile test. (3) Z-type window test. 2. When the restraint in Z-direction of the structure under consideration is small, the L-direction notched tensile test and sulphur content would be applied. In case the situation is rather serious, the reduction of area in Z-direction should be added. When the restraint is very severe, Z-type window test should be used in judging steel plates, as the cause of initiation is multiple and the test simulates actual construction practices. 3. Characteristics and points to be considered were clarified for each test method.
