It was already shown that a reheat cracking was an intergranular cracking occurring at high temperature and that there was a relationship between the susceptibility to the cracking and the fracture strength of HAZ at high temperature. But the fracture strength of HAZ was not sufficient to explain the susceptibility to the cracking thoroughly. In the present report, another factor was quantitatively examined. Experiments were made with an apparatus that could simulate a practical stress relief heat treatment using a small weldment specimen. The obtained results from the present experiments are as follows : (1) Weldment which is highly susceptible to the cracking shows a little stress decrement during a sress relief heat treatment. The stress relaxation characteristics of base material is another factor controlling the susceptibility to the cracking of weldment. (2) The susceptibility to the cracking can be expressed with two factors in one figure, one being the stress relaxation characteristics of base material and the other the fracture strength of HAZ at high temperature.
