Mechanism of CO_2 laser procssing was discussed on the basis of heat conduction theory and experiments. A generallized heat conduction theory for moving surface heat source with non-uniform energy distribution and any waveform of power supply was developed, and temperature distributions were computed in relation to time and heating conditions. A laser-weldability was discussed on the basis of the heat conduction and optical properties of the work piece and metals were clasified according to it. Interaction between focused laser beam and surface-treated metal was observed using high-speed camera and also discussed from the view point of the heat conduction theory.
