The absorption characteristics of metallic specimen in various surface conditions were evaluated in the wavelength 10.6μ transient absorptance as well as relation between the absorptance and some parameters involving the power level and traveling velocity of the specimen were obtained when focused and unfocused CO_2 laser beam impinged upon the specimen. It was found that the surface treatment was the promissing method to enhance the absorptance, which was so low in polished surface condition that a CO_2 laser had been less desirable as a heat source for metal processing such as welding. No bad effect of the surface treatment on the metallurgical and mechanical properties was obserbed when CO_2 laser was applied for welding of metal. A welding method was presented in order to make possible or easy the welding of thick metal.
