Beam focusing characteristics of multimode laser which is constructed for a heat source are discussed. The size and shape of the focused laser beam spots are measured at various locations on the chief ray under various focusing conditions using a simple method. The method of measuring beam energy distribution at focal point and focal line is developed. Its profile obtained by a concave spherical mirror with a radius of curvature 310mm may be approximated by a Gaussian curve having 0.5 mm diameter at e^<-1> power point. It is shown that deep hole can be obtained due to "self-focusing effect" of the laser beam in the drilled hole.
