Some fundamental electrical characteristics of high frequency (3 kHz) arc were made clear experimentally and theoretically. The v_a-i_a curve is resistive in 3 kHz W-W arc, since the temperature of arc column is held to be nearly constant in spite of current alternation and besides the polarity exchange is very easy due to the high temperature residual plasma at the zero current phase, i.e. restriking voltage seems to be unnecessary for high frequency W-W arc. Such experimental data are quantitatively close to the results of theoretical analysis on the thermal energy balance at 3 kHz arc column, and even qualitatively at 60 Hz. In the second part of this paper, a study was made on the restriking phenomena in high frequency arc with an electrode of cold cathode type. The restriking spark voltage, which is necessary for restriking of a low frequency arc, seems to be unnecessary to restrike 3 kHz arc. So the restriking voltage of 3 kHz arc is considerably lower than that of 60 Hz arc and the restriking phenomenon is characterized by the glow process alone at high frequency. The frequency dependence of such a restriking glow voltage is negligibly small and the restriking glow voltage is nearly equal to the normal cathode fall of D.C. glow discharge.
