Diffusion Bonding of Aluminum Bronze to Stainless Steel and Improvement of the Weldability

The improvement of the weldability of the joint between aluminum bronze and austenitic stainless steel has been investigated. The joints were directly bonded without insert metal, and also bonded with insert metal of Ni or Cu foils. Cu-Ni and Cu-Ag foils were also used as an insert metal to improve the weldability of the joints. The bond strength of the joints with the insert metal of Ni or Cu foils was higher than that without the insert metal at the bonding temperature from 670℃ to 960℃. The strength was the highest value of 410MPa on the joints with a Ni foil at 710℃-bonding temperature. The weldability of the joints was improved in case of using a Cu-Ni foil. However, when a Cu-Ag alloy foil containing of 3.35%Ag was used as the insert metal, the weldability of the joints was further improved and the bond strength of the joint was the maximum value of 450MPa at the bonding temperature of 890℃.
