It is noted that the stress distribution around a crack tip in weldments is known as one of the most important factors to evaluate the fracture performances of the welded structures. However, it is still less economical to calculate the welding residual stress as well as the external restraint loading stress around a crack tip in weldments by the thermo-elasto-plastic finite element method. In this paper a different approach which combines the linear boundary element method with the linear finite element method is proposed in order to solve this kind of problems. Subsequently, a generalized stress distribution model is also intorduced in this paper. And hence, the stress intensity factor for all the cases can be evaluated accurately by linear extrapolation. Then, the analysis of a slit-type butt welded plate with a transverse delayed crack and subjected to external restraint tensile loading is carried out to demonstrate the validity of this proposed numerical method.
