For the investigation of residual stresses associated with welding, the thermal-elastic-plastic finite element method and destructive experimental measurement are often used. And also a simplified approach for calculating residual stresses, in which inherent strains are dealt with as parameters, is proposed to increase the accuracy of the measurement. However, the corresponding inherent strain distributions are difficult to obtain. In this paper, a semi-analytic method which combines the optimization technique, finite element method, and experimental data is introduced to simulate the most suitable inherent strains distribution and subsequently the residual stresses can be estimated accurately. The analysis of the residual stresses in slit-type butt welded rectangular plates is taken as an example to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method.
