The high energy density of lasers makes it possible to employ them for non-contact processing of materials which are difficult to machine or remove mechanically. This study was undertaken with the objective of evaluating the feasibility of laser cutting of concrete and reinforced concrete. The effects of laser output power, focal length, focusing position, cutting speed, the blowing direction and the pressure of assist gas, and pulsed beam were investigated using a 1 kW CO_2 laser. The main conclusions obtained from this study are summarized as follows : (1) Energy density in excess of 10^6 W/cm^2 (10GW/m^2) is necessary for cutting concrete, and density in excess of 10^7W/cm^2 (100GW/m^2) is required for cutting reinforced concrete. (2) The maximum depth of the cut kerf of ordinary concrete at 1kW laser output power was 43mm at a cutting speed of 2.0cm/min. The depth of cut kerf is largest when the laser beam is focussed at 0 to 5mm below the work surface.
