Flesh Intake and Production of Offspring in Colonies of Polistes chinensis antennalis (Hymenoptera, Vespidae) : II. Flesh Intake and Production of Reproductives

Flesh intake and production of reproductives at a colony level were estimated for colonies of the polistine wasp Polistes chinensis antennalis PEREZ. At the same time a method to estimate the amount of flesh intake of colonies throughout a breeding season was also shown. Mean amount of flesh brought back to 19 observed nests was 9.35 g in dry weight, and the mean cell number 258.1. Twelve of them of which the average cell number was 244.7 and average dry weight 8.55 g were used to analyse the production of reproductives. Numbers of reproductive females and of males successfully produced per nest were 48.3 and 57.9 respectively. Mean dry individual weight at emergence was 37.0 mg for reproductive female and 19.2 mg for male. Total dry weight of reproductive females was estimated at 1, 814 mg and that of males 1, 100 mg. About a half of total flesh intake was allocated to produce reproductives as their larval food. Ratios of dry weight of reproductive females and of males to the amount of flesh intake were 22.4 and 13.9% respectively.
