The karyotypes of twelve species of the genus Macrophya are described. Haploid chromosome numbers range from 8 to 12 in this genus : imitator, exilis and apicalis have n=8 complements ; infumata has n=9 ; annulitibia, timida, malaisei, carbonaria, coxalis, falsifica and rohweri have n=10 ; fascipennis has n=12. This range is considerably wide in comparison with other genera of the family Tenthredinidae. The type number is probably n=10 and the divergence in chromosome number seems to have occurred to the directions of increase (n=10→12) and decrease (n=10→8) in the course of evolution in this genus. It would seem that there is some agreement between karyological and morphological similarities in this genus.
