Sperm displacement in the turnip sawfly, Athalia rosae, was investigated. Virgin females were individually mated with a single virgin male (single-mating) or successively with two virgin males (double-mating). The number of sperm stored in the spermatheca of the females in the single-mating group was not different from that in the double-mating group. However, it decreased dramatically when the second mating was interrupted halfway through. The penis had a conical projection with many bristles along the lateral side, and a mass of sperm was observed on the projection of males in copula at the beginning of the second mating. These results indicate that the second male removes the sperm of the first male stored in the spermatheca using the projection on the penis before ejaculation.
