The Cicadas of the Genus Platypleura (Homoptera, Cicadidae) in the Ryukyu Archipelago, with the Description of a New Species

• In this paper I have recognized five species of the genus Platypleura in the Ryukyu Archipelago, including a new species from Ishigaki Is. They are : 1) P. kaempferi (FABRICIUS), 2) P. yayeyamana MATSUMURA, 3) P. kuroiwae MATSUMURA, 4) P. miyakona (MATSUMURA) and 5) P. albivannata M. HAYASHI, sp. nov. The five species are divided into two groups. The Group I includes (1) and (2), and the Group II (3), (4) and (5). Distribution and speciation of these species are discussed in relation to the geological history of the Ryukyu Archipelago. It is very probable that the species of the Group I had spread over the islands earlier than those of the Group II, and the latter could not invade into the islands north of Amami-Oshima Is., and that, in the Group I, P. yayeyamana was differentiated from P. kaempferi in Yaeyama, and in the Group II, P. albivannata from P. kuroiwae in Ishigaki Is., P. miyakona from P. albivannata in Miyako Is. Biological observations including singing activities are also described.
