The termination of pupal diapause was studied comparatively in the two subspecies, demetrius and liukiuensis of Papilio protenor CRAMER. In demetrius from Tokyo, there seems to be two distinct strains, one having a long diapause which is not controlled by day-length, and the other having a short diapause which is modified by photoperiod. The diapause in liukiuensis from Iriomote Is. was shorter and less variable in duration than that in the former strain of demetrius. This difference persisted in continuous darkness. The diapause was terminated and the adult emergence was synchronized by a certain period of chilling at 5℃ in both subspecies, and also by keeping at 15℃ in liukiuensis. The non-diapausing pupal period of liukiuensis was somewhat prolonged under continuous darkness, particularly at 20℃. The developmental period and developmental zero point for each stage were similar in the two subspecies. From the annual effective temperatures and day-lengths in Tokyo and Ishigaki Is., the life cycles of the two subspecies in their native localities were discussed.
