The induction of pupal diapause was studied comparatively in the two subspecies of Papilio protenor CRAMER, the temperate subsp. demetrius CRAM. from Tokyo and the subtropical subsp. liukiuensis FRUHST. from Iriomote Is. Their photoperiodic curves of diapause incidence at 23°±2℃ were markedly different from one another. The maximum rate of diapause was 100% in the former, while 76% in the latter, and their critical photoperiods were 13hr 47min and 12hr 27min, respectively. Under a short photoperiod of 9L15D, the rate declined in both subspecies as the temperature became lower than 23℃. This trend was more conspicuous in liukiuensis than in demetrius. The photoperiodic sensitivity was restricted to the 4th and 5th last larval instars in demetrius, while it persisted throughout the larval stage in liukiuensis. Although some individuals of demetrius exposed to progressively increasing day-lengths below the critical photoperiod from the 1st to 4th larval instars were prevented to enter diapause, such an effect was not observed in liukiuensis. From these results, part of the population of liukiuensis seems to winter as non-diapausing larvae, and to enter diapause as pupae in early spring in their subtropical environment.
