Numerical Phenetic Relationships of the Genus Andrena (Hymenoptera, Andrenidae) of Japan, with a New Introduction of Component Pattern Diagrams

Numerical phenetic relationships among 59 species and 2 subspecies belonging to 20 subgenera of the genus Andrena of Japan were studied by using the methods of cluster analysis and principal component analysis of 70 adult morphological characters. Two correlation and two distance phenograms, a 3-dimensional scatter diagram and component pattern diagrams were used to develop the species groups at the subgeneric level. The component pattern diagrams were newly introduced into numerical taxonomy, which were proved useful for displaying the phenetic relationships. The results of these analyses were radically the same and were in general agreement with current classification. However, several principal differences were also indicated as follows : takachihoi of the subgenus Euandrena was separated from the members in the same subgenus ; prostomias- and mitakensis-groups of the subgenus Calomelissa were recognized better to be raised to the subgeneric level ; ishikawai-group was away from valeriana of the subgenus Holandrena. Three major groupings above the subgeneric level were newly obtained and defined.
