A Comparison of Various Clustering Methods Applied to the Japanese Andrenid Bees

A comparison of ten clustering methods was made with the values of the Euclidian distance coefficient. The data was derived from external morphological characters chosen from 70 females in 23 species of the genus Andrena (Hymenoptera, Andrenidae) in Japan. The cophenetic correlation coefficient was used as a criterion in testing the propriety of each of the ten clustering methods. The taxonomic significance of transference of the species of the major groups was also considered. The results derived from these methods listed in the following decreasing order of efficiency, judged by the valus of cophenetic correlation coefficient are: UPGMA, WPGMA, flexible groupaverage (β=-0.25), flexible (β=-0.25), complete linkage, Ward, single linkage, mode (k=5), centroid and median clustering methods. The single linkage and model clustering methods produced a chaining effect. The centroid and median clustering methods showed a reversal of the values of the distance coefficient in the process of clustering.
