The Effect of Using Different Numbers of Characters on the Clustering Method as Applied to Japanese Andrenid Bees

The effect of using different numbers of characters on the clustering method was tested using 23 species of the Japanese andrenid bees. One hundred and thirty female external morphological characters were chosen from each species. The five character subsets, which consisted of 130, 100, 70, 50 and 30 characters, respectively, were analyzed by the UPGMA clustering method based on the values of the Euclidian distance coefficient. The five different analyses resulted in different clusters. However, the two phenograms derived from the 100 and 130 character subsets were similar to each other.
