Leaf-Rolling Site Preference by Cycnotrachelus roelofsi (Coleoptera : Attelabidae)

Oviposition site preference by a bivoltine attelabid weevil, Cycnotrachelus roelofsi, that feeds on and rolls fresh leaves of Styrax japonicus for oviposition, was studied. Overwintered females preferred medial spring leaves to lateral leaves and selected larger leaves for rolling. The leaf infestation by first generation adults was much more severe than that by the overwintered adults and the first generation females avoided leaves that had been infested by conspecific adults. In addition, fresh summer leaves available for the first generation females were less abundant than fresh spring leaves for overwintered females, because the production of summer leaves reached a peak in April and then fell in May when the first generation females emerge. As a result, first generation females inevitably rolled smaller summer leaves for rolling.
