The effect of rearing density on wing-form determination in thelytokous Thrips nigropilosus was examined. Developmental period, head width, pre-oviposition period and early fecundity of each wing morph were investigated to clarify adaptive significance of the effect of rearing density on the production of brachypterae. Higher densities enhanced production of brachypterae. Mortality and developmental period from hatching to adult eclosion were generally increased with rearing density. The developmental period of the brachypterae was the longest among all wing morphs. The brachypterae had longer oviposition periods, smaller heads, and lower fecundity than other wing morphs.
