Overwintering Ground Beetle Assemblages along the Kizu River, Kyoto

Overwintering ground beetles were sampled quantitatively at twelve microhabitats along the Kizu River in Kyoto, Japan. A total of 492 individuals (156 adults and 336 larvae) belonging to 37 species of Carabidae and one species of Brachinidae were collected. The density of overwintered adults varied among the microhabitats. At the margins of running water, larvae of Harpalus spp. overwintered with high density (37.0 individuals/m^2), a finding which may be based on the seasonality of floods and food sources. The overwintering developmental stages of carabids were classified into three types : i) adult (24 species), ii) larva (7 species), and iii) adult and larva (6 species). According to previous studies on carabid life cycles in Japan, these types roughly correspond respectively to : i) spring breeders, ii) autumn breeders with short-lived adults, and iii) autumn breeders with long-lived adults.
