Overwintering ground beetles were collected by the quadrat sampling method from the forest floor in a warm-temperate forest of Mt. Nukatayama, Osaka Prefecture, central Japan. In total, we collected 213 carabid beetles representing 11 species, the majority of which were spring-breeders. Their distribution was analyzed in relation to several environmental factors. Most dominant carabid species overwintered preferentially in the exposed ground at forest edges with steep inclination, little vegetation cover and little litter layer. Since the soil-digging sampling method is the traditional method for collecting carabids and specifically from such exposed ground, this was deemed to be an efficient method for our purposes. Facing direction did not affect the hibernating distribution of the beetles.
