Porcine brain natriuretic peptide (pBNP) elicited a significant increase in water intake, when administered intraperitoneally (5 and 10μg/bird) or intracerebroventricularly (0.3 μg/bird), in the water-replete Japanese quail, Coturnix coturnix japonica. Intraperitoneal injection of endothelin-1 (ET-1; 0.3, 1 and 3μg/bird) did not affect water intake, but intracerebroventricular administration of ET-1 (10 ng/bird) slightly enhanced water intake in the water-replete Japanese quail. The possible involvement of these peptides in thirst mechanisms is discussed.
