In order to examine the mode of action of androgen in the hypogastric ganglion which shows sexual dimorphism, pregnant ICR mice were injected with testosterone propionate (TP) or non-aromatizable androgen (5α-dihydrotestosterone, 5α-DHT) from days 14 to 18 of gestation. TP-exposed male offspring had about 1.8 times of neurons in the hypogastric ganglion compared with controls. 5α-DHT-exposed males also significantly increased the neuron number of the ganglion to a level comparable to that of TP-exposed males. These results suggest that aromatization from androgen to estrogen may not primarily be involved in the process of the sexual differentiation of the mouse hypogastric ganglion.
