A bactericidal substance in the Bombyx mori hemolymph strongly suppressed lectininduced lymphocyte DNA synthesis. This substance was purified by ion exchange, gel filtration and thin-layer chromatography and characterized to be a 1 K daltons peptide. The specificity of this peptide for target cells was analyzed and the physiological and phylogenetic significances of this peptide are discussed.
