Directionally selective visual units were recorded in and around the mesencephalic posterior commissure in Japanese dace (Tribolodon hakonensis) during stimulation by a rotating striped drum. Spontaneous discharge rates of the units were increased or decreased depending on the direction of rotation of the drum. The units had movement-sensitive, binocularly-driven receptive fields with horizontal extents of 240°. The relation between the properties of the directionally selective units and optokinetic responses induced by the same stimuli is discussed.
