Four groups of young Lebistes reticulatus, which had preliminarily been treated with a solution of ethinyl-estradiol (50μg/l) for 24 hours, were fed on a diet containing ethinyl-estradiol (125μg/g) for 30 or 40 days from the second day after birth (Table 1). After discontinuation of estrogen feeding, the experimental animals, except those of the Group III, were immediately killed and fixed. The group III was continued on the normal diet for 20 days. The development of the gonad and the gonoduct of all females in the experiment was accelerated. The testicular differentiation of males treated with estrogen, however, wascompletely supressed having been transformed into ovarial type (Table 2). Fig. 11. shows a schematic representation of the morphological processes in the transformation of male gonads to female ones observed in the present study. The primary mesorchium of the gonads of treated males was broken by the tension which arose with the movement of the two germinal lobes, and afterward it regressed. As a result of the newly aroused active proliferation of the peritoneal cells which coincides with the degeneration of the mesorchium, two peritoneal folds are formed laterally at the coelomin angle. These folds extend toward the lateral side of each germinal lobe and connect with the dorsolateral angle of the lobe, resulting in the formation of a new cavity, i.e., the prospective ovarian cavity enclosed within the gonads. In a later development, this cavity opens into the lumen of the oviduct which develops anew at the posterior region of the trunk. In addition, the germ cells in such affected gonads, were observed being transformed into oocyte-like cells. Thus, the complete feminization of the male gonads of the teleost can be brought about artificially by estrogen treatment. But, when treatment is discontinued before a certain stage of development, the induced sex reversal is unstable and the once established differentiation of the gonads may revert again to their genetic pattern. In conclusion, it can be said that irreversible feminization of the male gonads may certainly be achieved by estrogen treatment when the treatment is continued until the oocyte-like cells of the affected gonad are surrounded with follicle cells and simultaneously the covering epithelium of the induced ovarian cavity indicates proliferative properties. About 80 days of treatments is necessary to induce complete feminization in the present species.
