Nine groups of young of Lebistes reticulatus had been separately given the diet containing methyl-testosterone (75 μg/g) for 14, 20, 30, and 40 days since the second day after birth (Table 1). Prior to the androgen feeding, the young of seven groups were reared in solution of methyl-testosterone (50μg/l) for 24 hours. After the discontinuation of androgen feeding, animals of some groups were immediately preserved, however, those of the other groups were successively kept on normal diet for 10 or 20 days. In the half of androgenized fish, development of gonopodium and appearance of male colour patteerns were obviously accelerated. In the other half of experimentals anal fin transformation appeared at early stage, but male colour patterns did not appear within the period of the experiment. Sex distributions among the androgenized fish are shown in Table 2. The testicular differentiation of experimentals was so conspicuously accelerated that spermatids were observable even in the young testes of fish of 15 days old after birth (Figs.2 and 7). The differentiation of ovaries in androgenized female is grandually inhibited and modified into male direction within one month after the beginning of administrations. Such a modification of ovarial structure becomes apparent when the fish reached the age from 31 to 41 days old after firth. Thestructure of intersexual gonads in experimentals reveals that the sex modification proceeds from ovary to testis, but not from testis to ovary (Fig.3, 4 and 5). The evidence of paradoxical feminization could not be found in experimentals. Considering the results obtained in each group, it was confirmed that the sex modification of female gonads is induced most effectively when the androgenic administration was begun at an early stage of gonad development. The fact that the masculinization of young ovary of treated L.reticulatus was initiated by the activated proliferation of mesenchymal cells (Fig.6), should be marked in contrast with the contradictory result reported by many investigators in their similar studies on Elasmobranchii and Salamandrina.
