Adults of Ctenolepisma were fed on starched paper in a glass bowl, and the eggs they laid were daily collected for abont 2 weeks from the end of July. They were fixed at various stages of development with Huettner's modification of Kahle's formol-alcohol-acetic acid mixture, sectioned in 5 micra and stained with Delafield's haemotoxylin for the study of the development of the corpus cardiacum. The observation has revealed the following points. 1. In the middle embryonal stage, i.e., at 19 days after the egg being laid, the rudiments of the corpora cardiaca begin to arrise from the dorsal wall of the foregut in combination with the rudiment of the hypocerebral ganglion, as a mass of 20 micra in diameter. It was composed of about thirty cells. 2. Immediately after leaving the foregut, the mass divides itself into three parts, each consisting of about ten cells. Two lataral masses give rise to the corpora cardiaca, while the central one to the hypocerebral ganglion. 3. The rudiment of the hypocerebral ganglion moves to just under the aorta, whereas the rudiments of the corpora cardiaca move slightly in the dorsolateral direction and take their position on either side of the aorta. The number of the component cells of the corpus cardiacum does not seem to increase up to the time of hatching.
