In the vicinity of Kyoto City, Dictyoploca-larvae pupate usually from the middle of June to the beginning of July and the pupae emerge as moths at the end of October after about four months of pupal diapause. Seven Bombyx-brains removed either from the mature larvae or from the pupae 3 days, 6 days, and 9 days after pupation respectively, were implanted into each prepupa of Dictyoploca japonica. The results obtained are as follows: (1) The emergence of moths in the case of implanting the mature larval brains occurs three weeks earlier than in control worms. (2) When the implanted brains were isolated from the pupae at the age of 3 days or 6 days after pupation, experimental animals emerge also about two weeks earlier than the controls. (3) However, the implanted brains from pupae 9 days after pupation exert no significant effect on the host, i. e., the emergence occurs simultaneously in both experimentals and controls. In short, the brains of the mature larvae of Bombyx are the most effective in the process of promoting the metamorphosis of Dictyoploca-pupae. (4) This effect of the brain is hormonal, and the brainhormone is shown to be speciesnon-specific concerning the stimulating effect on the prothoracic gland, which releases the metamorphoses-hormone.
