In the coures of the revisional study of the conger eels collected from various parts of Japan, I found several interesting specimens which are apparently referable to the genus Alloconger. Upon careful examination of these fishes, they were found to represent two new subspecies which are described herein as Alloconger shiroanago major and Alloconger shiroanago shiroanago respectively. 1. Alloconger shiroanago major susp. nov. Holotype: NO. 23355, 366.0mm. in total length, off Shibushi, Kagoshima Prefecture, September 1-3, 1954. Paratypes: Nos. 1118, 12143, 23353-23354, 23356-23360, 25278, 25279, 25281 and 26916; 268.5-533.0mm. in total length, taken from East China Sea, off Shibushi, Kagoshima Prefecture, Yawatahama market, Ehime Prefecture and off Owashi, Mie Prefecture. Pectoral rays 12-13 (13). Pores in lateral line 52-53 (52) before the vent. Vertebrae 71-73+72-76=144-147. Head 5.50-6.19 (6.19) in total length and 1.44-1.72 (1.72) in trunk length. Head and trunk 2.16-2.29 (2.28) in total length. Snout length 4.31-4.63 (4.48) in head length; eye diameter 4.66-5.62 (5.05); interorbital space 7.05-8.53 (7.39); distance from tip of snout to origin of dorsal fin 1.07-1.15 (1.14); distance between gill-openings 6.15-7.66 (6.49); pectoral fin length 3.16-3.99 (3.69). Upper lip with free narrow upturned labial flange; no bony projections from lower edge of bony labial canal to upturned labial flange. Teeth small, conical in shape, and mostly blunt; the patch of teeth on premaxillary slightly exposed in front of mouth on lower surface of moderately projecting snout, when mouth is closed. The cleft of mouth extending posteriorly to below middle of eye. Sensory pores on head well developed. Lateral line canal well developed, the pores 139 to 145 (141), opening along lower margin of the canal. Dorsal inserted before a vertical above gill-opening by a distance equal to half length of pectoral fin. Caudal fin short; tail stout. In formalin head and body pale brown above, paler below. Dorsal, anal and caudal pale with dark margin. Remarks: The present subspecies closely resembles Congrellus bowersi given by Jenkins ('03), but it differs from the latter in having rather smaller eye (4.66 to 5.62 in head length instead of being 4.00 in the latter), slender body (depth 3.11 to 3.48 in head length as compared with 2.6 in the latter), and more numerous pores in lateral line (52 to 53 versus 47 in the latter) before the vent. 2. Alloconger shiroanago shiroanago subsp. nov. Holotype: No. 19016, 273.7mm. in total length, off Owashi, Mie Prefecture, November 12-17, 1952. Paratypes: Nos. 1117, 1119, 2076-2077, 2111, 20599, 21312, 21710-21711, 23551, 25156-25168, 25275-25276 and 26915; 240.7-409.1mm. in total length, obtained from Yawatahama market, Ehime Prefecture, Mimase market, Kochi Prefecture, off Owashi, Mie Prefecture and Wakasa Bay, Kyoto Prefecture. Pectoral rays 11-13 (12). Pores in lateral line 56-59 (58) before the vent. Vertebrae 80-86+74-79=156-161. Head 5.83-6.25 (6.07) in total length and 1.54-1.93 (1.63) in trunk length. Head and trunk 2.18-2.41 (2.31) in total length. Snout length 4.23-5.03 (4.46) in head length; eye diameter 4.53-5.62 (5.62); interorbital space 6.63-8.51 (7.50); distance from tip of snout to origin of dorsal fin 1.01-1.21 (1.18); distance between gill-openings 6.38-10.31 (7.12), pectoral fin length 3.40-3.98 (3.98). General form of the body and coloration are similar to those of Alloconger shiroanago major, described above. Remarks: The present subspecies closely resembles Alloconger shiroanago major, but it is distinguished from the latter in having more numerous both lateral line pores and vertebrae. The present subspecies also resembles Ariosoma obud established by Herre ('23), but differs from it in having rather shorter pectoral (3.40-3.98 in head instead of being 2.8 in the latter), and more numerous pores in lateral line (56-59 as compared to 40 in the latter) before the vent.
