1. The malanotic growth in the intestines of the mature third-instar larvae of v tu and st tu strains of D. melanogaster were almost completely inhibited by addition of 1 mM. phenylthiocarbamide (PTC) to the synthetic culture medium. 2. When the melanotic tumors cultured in the medium involving 1 mM. PTC for 20 hours, were transferred to the medium without PTC, and cultured still more 20 hours, the excellent melanotic growth of tumors was observed. 3. As a result of above facts, it is assumed that the pretumorous state may have proceeded in the tissue surrounding the tumors cultured in the PTC-medium. 4. histological observations on the intestinal tumors showed that there were amorphous melanotic masses in the tissues of the intestinal walls.
