1.The reactions produced by immersing the melanophores under various conditions into the glucose solution were observed for 10 minutes. The melanophores having completely contracted when the scales were isolated expanded in the glucose solution. The melanophores having expanded soon after isolation and spontaneously and completely contracted thereafter expanded transiently and recontract in the glucose solution. 2.The melanophores having partially or nearly completely expanded when isolated, expanded further more without any previons contraction. The melanophores having expanded when isolated and partially contracted after isolation showed the temporal expansion followed by contraction in the glucose solution. 3.The melanophores pretreated first by Ringer solution and secondly by KCl solution reacted in several types according to the forms of the effects of KCl treatment. The melanophores having completely contracted in the KCl solution expanded in the glucose solution. The melanophores having partially contracted in the KCl solution contracted in this solution. The melanophores having re-expanded after the temporal contraction in the KCl solution showed the temporal contraction followed by re-expansion once again or the fluctuative or simple expansion in the glucose solution. 4.The melanophores having previously expanded in Ringer solution showed the simple contraction or the temporal contraction followed by re-expansion. 5.From the above results it is suggestive that glucose has no peculier effect on the melanophores, and the reactions observed in the glucose solution seems to be determind by the conditon of the melanophores, probably by the leakage of the ions from the melanophores, and the leakage of Na ion causes contraction and that of K does expansion of the melanophores.
