Effects of NaSCN and LiCl on the regeneration in Bdellocephala brunnea (Ij. et Kab.) were studied. The head formation was inhibited more strongly by treatment with NaSCN (Tables 1, 3). On the contrary, the tail formation was inhibited more strongly by NaSCN than LiCl (Table 2). In the case of NaSCN treatment, there were many individuals which, once having formed a tail, began to disintegrate from the tail end and stopped the disintegration at the level of the old tissue. After 2-3 weeks, some of them again formed a small tail at the posterior surface of the old tissue (Fig. 4), and one of them formed a head instead of a tail, i. e., brought about heteromorphosis. The teratopthalmic form with 3 eye-spots appeared relatively more from the pieces treated with LiCl. In the case of NaSCN treatment appeared individuals with double eye-spots relatively more, and a worm with double heads also appeared (Table 1, Fig. 2). When the entire worms were cultured in the solution of 0.01 per cent NaSCN, a pit was made in most of them at the dorsal surface of the mouth within 2 weeks (Table 4). The worms with a pit were decapitated at the level of postcephalic base, and then, the remaining part was cut into two pieces at the level of the pit. Cultured in petri-dish filled with well-water, the fore piece (including prepharyngeal and pharyngeal region) regenerated a head at the both cut surfaces, but these were few cases. The hind piece (including postpharyngeal and tail region) regenerated a head and a tail at the ritht and left sides of its anterior end respectively (Fig. 6), but this was with only one worm. That is to say, a head was regenerated from the piece taken from the pharyngeal (except the pharyngeal base) and postpharyngeal regions, which never regenerate a head in normal case.
