Observation were carried out by collecting flies with the use of traps baited with fermenting banana in the vicinities of Sapporo (about 15m in altitude), and on Mt. Asahi at an altitude of about 1060m. In a total of 1728 flies obtained here, the following 17 species were identified: D. auraria, D. nigromaculata, D. transversa, D. bifasciata, D. immigrans, D. testacea, D. suzukii, D. histrio, D. funebris, D. litea, D. rufa, D. coracina, D. sordidula, D. robusta II, D. (Hirtodrosophila) sp., D. sp. I, and D. sp. II (Table 1). It was found that D. auraria, D. nigromaculata, D. transversa, D. bifasciata and D. funebris were collected in a large number, and that they showed a bimodal diurnal activity with two peaks formed in the morning and evening (Figs. 3 and 4). Light condition seems to largely influence upon their activity. Flies became dormant in light less than 4lux, or at temperature below 10℃; either bifore sunset or after sunrise. In the humidity higher than 90% in the cloudy or rainy days, the flies showed imperfect bimodal activity (Fig. 3). It was assumed that a little breese or a light ram does not affect upon the diurnal behavior of Drosophila.
